Rococo, an art movement that emerged in France in the early 19th century, emerged from the Baroque period during the Age of Enlightenment. Rococo is an extension of late Baroque art rather than a style in its own right. There are interesting parallels between the relationship between the two, and the relationship between the High Renaissance and Mannerism. The Rococo style was a reaction to the "solemn and stately" style associated with the baroque formalism and rigidity of court life. After the reign of Louis XIV, a movement towards a lighter, more attractive style began in French architectural decoration, and it soon spread throughout Europe.
