Over time, the excesses of Baroque art and its shift to excessive decorative elements (Rococo) created a reaction in some artists, and they longed for the classical world of the past. The longed-for spirit of the ancient world could not be reached. Neo-classicism emphasized rationality and the revival of tradition. Neo-classical artists incorporated classical styles and subjects such as columns, pediments, friezes (wall decorations) and other decorations into their works. In neo-classical paintings, despite the bright accents of the colors, it is generally seen to be dark, while the light is evenly distributed throughout the painting. The paintings of Jacques-Louis David and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres constitute the peak of neo-classicism.
